Thai Crafts Gold

Experience the workshop on the ancient and traditional Thai art technique of gold gilding.

Thai Gold Gilding

The incorporation of pure gold leaf in traditional Thai painting can be traced back to the Siam kingdom during the Ayutthaya era. The traditional Thai water gold gilding, referred to as “Lai Rod Nam” or “Long Ruk Pid Thong”, was at its height of popularity during the 22–23 B.E. period. The magnificent gold color adds a luxurious feel to any artwork, elevating its beauty.

Thai art and history have always been a source of inspiration for us since our days as students at the College of Fine Arts. Following our graduation, we embarked on our journeys to explore various cultures abroad. Our deep-rooted love for Thai arts has motivated us to continue pursuing our passion by sharing our rich culture through art. In May 2018, we initiated our first workshop at our family home in Bangkok. The experience has been truly rewarding as we have had the opportunity to introduce this unique Thai art form to visitors from all corners of the globe. Regrettably, due to the onset of the pandemic in February 2020, we had to cease operations at our workshop. However, in October 2021, we made the decision to relocate from Bangkok to the serene town of Fang in the northern region of Chiang Mai, seeking a closer connection with nature. As Thailand prepares to reopen its doors to international travelers in May 2022, we are thrilled to announce the opening of the Thai Crafts Gold Workshop, where we will once again indulge in our passion for Thai art. We extend a warm invitation to you to visit our new workshop in Chiang Mai City. Our hope is that through this workshop, our guests will have a truly enriching experience as they witness the beauty of Thai crafted gold through our eyes.

Reviews

A great insight into the lai rod nam process. in this workshop we looked at some examples from Thai culture and then were shown how to make our own small piece. the workshop was simple but thorough. Terasin explains the materials and process really clearly and is very helpful. it is lovely to be taught by someone so passionate about his craft, and so kind in helping you to learn how to create your own. really fun, really well organised and lovely people.

I really enjoyed learning this Thai Gold Craft artwork called "Lai Rod Nam" with 2 experienced and patient teachers... I want to encourage all (expatriate and Thai residents) to attend this training to enable you to appreciate the efforts and patience it takes to create these precious traditional Thai Gold Crafts. This technique is over 400 years old and you can see these artifacts in many places in Thailand... usually in museums or temples. You can learn how to make your own. If I can do this at 77, so can you ! Cory Croymans, Former Commercial Attache at the Belgian Embassy in Bangkok

An amazing experience and exposure to something that is fundamentally representative of Thai culture and art. The experience gives you the hands-on opportunity to learn about the origin, and evolution of the art style of Lai Rod Num as it is performed today. The passion and hospitality were both remarkable and welcoming. The whole experience is a unique find amongst the things you can do while visiting Bangkok. You can’t miss this, and should be in your top 3 things to do while visiting, it is worth it!
